Congratulations on making the decision to become a lawyer in the state of South Dakota. Similar to North Dakota the process of becoming a lawyer starts with getting an undergraduate degree at a four year university.
The second step is to get accepted and to graduate from a ABA accredited law school. In addition to good grades it is to your benefit to build as much legal experience as possible. Internships (regardless of pay) are a fantastic source of experience. Also look for opportunities to shadow other attorneys and other professionals in legal careers. These experiences and contacts may come in handy when your searching for your first job out of law school.
The third step to becoming a lawyer in South Dakota is to pass the bar exam. While its certainty not required, past test takers and professors suggest taking 6 months to study for the exam after graduation. You will not be able to legally practice law in the state of South Dakota until you receive a passing score.
The fourth step requires being sworn in as an attorney. At this point you will be able to legally practice law in the state of South Dakota. Congratulations!
